If anyone doubted James Cameron’s ability to capture the world’s attention for a third time, the numbers are officially in to silence the sceptics. As of this morning, Avatar: Fire and Ash has reportedly smashed through the $2 billion barrier globally, maintaining its iron grip on the number one box office spot for a fifth consecutive week.

The conversation has not just been about the money, though. Since Avtar 3’s December release, audiences have been floored by the introduction of the “Ash People.” This aggressive, fire-wielding Na’vi tribe has shifted the franchise’s tone into darker territory, while the new volcanic biomes are being hailed as a generation-defining leap in CGI.

It’s a visual spectacle that demands the biggest screen possible, proving that the theatrical experience is very much alive. The ripple effect is being felt everywhere. Disney+ has reported a massive surge in subscriptions this month, as fans frantically binge Avatar and The Way of Water to prepare for the trip to the theatres.

Meanwhile, Hollywood is buzzing with awards fever. Fresh off the Golden Globes earlier this month, Fire and Ash has emerged as the heavy favourites for the Oscars. Social media is currently a battleground, with fans debating whether Cameron’s technical masterpiece can hold off competitors like Dune: Messiah or the indie darlings expected to emerge from Sundance later this week.

Ultimately, January 2026 belongs to Pandora. Cameron has validated the “event film” strategy, proving that while streaming offers convenience, high-octane spectacles still command the premium of a cinema ticket.
